Walking Tree Travel and Smithsonian Student Adventures are always looking for dynamic individuals who share our passion for exploration, personal growth, and making the world a better place. This page is meant to serve as an overview to the various positions that are available at any given time. Please check out the below descriptions and feel free to apply to any that are a good match.

Program Leaders

Program Leaders are selected because they have shown dedication to the pursuit of foreign languages, cultural exploration and community development and want to share their enthusiasm with young adults. Leaders must be able to handle multiple issues at the same time, serve as a positive and energetic role model, and play friend, counselor, parent, guide and medical practitioner all at once, usually in at least two languages. It is a very challenging job, but even more rewarding. Our leaders have diverse backgrounds, but many are graduate students, educators or recent college graduates as they tend to have extensive time to travel during the North American summer. Leaders will cultivate curiosity, leadership and cultural awareness in our participants, communicate with the Country Director and core team members, organize daily activities, and facilitate the safest, most memorable experience possible.

The right candidate will also have a strong belief in our company mission and be motivated to share this philosophy of travel with their networks. Each Program Leader is expected to contribute at least one day of recruitment help and be available to attend a two day retreat in the spring.

Minimum Requirements

  • Four-year college degree or higher
  • Fluent in English and host country’s local language
  • Experience working and traveling with high school students
  • Extensive travel experience in host country
  • Passion to inspire the next generation of global citizens
  • Ability and desire to help recruit students and educators

Compensation

This is a paid independent contractor position and compensation depends on experience and length of program. Walking Tree Travel will cover all expenses associated with the program. We will also pay for any participants or teachers you recruit that end up traveling on one of our programs.

Country Directors

SSA maintains a Country Director in each of our host countries to help organize, prepare, and manage our programs. The job is seasonal with very flexible hours, offering a great way to make a supplemental income. Specifically, Country Directors are in charge of helping to establish and conceptualize the program, help with a safety and risk assessment, find service providers, make necessary reservations for hotels and transportation, talk to interested participants, make contact with potential homestay communities and identify, interview and prepare homestay families. This person will make preparations for service projects and activities and be on call while any program is in-country, among other duties. Essentially, the Country Director is our in-country expert for all things related to their host country. In addition to these core duties, our Country Directors are able to earn additional income while helping recruit more international students and teachers to our programs and generally helping promote our philosophy of travel to perspective travelers.

The Candidate

The ideal candidate will be a person who lives permanently (or at least the vast majority of the year) in the host country, has a profound understanding of the culture and language, and speaks at least English and the dominant local language fluently. He or she is someone who has worked with young adults, traveled extensively in the host country, and supports the ideals of community service and cultural engagement.  The individual is organized, self-motivated, has access to reliable transportation, email and phone, comfortable with budgeting in excel, and has a flexible schedule. Finally, we are looking for someone who is fun-loving, passionate about the transformative power of international travel, and works well within a team.

 Compensation

A set amount is paid upon completion of each of the below:

  • Per program that runs
  • Per custom program referral
  • Training and setup stipend
  • Per participant recruited for other programs
  • Per published press piece
  • Per day of school presentations

Outreach Associates

Outreach Associates are responsible for informing students, parents and teachers of new and existing programs with Smithsonian Student Adventures. They directly reach out to members of their communities and help interview and engage students to see if they are a good fit for one of our program.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES

  • Communicate with community members via phone, email or in person
  • Schedule and conduct meetings with community members
  • Give presentations on Smithsonian Student Adventures
  • Develop leads based on local knowledge
  • Data entry

SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Effective communicator on the phone and in person
  • Highly organized and punctual
  • Self-motivated and results-oriented

  • MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point) Proficient

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited university or community college
  • BA or BS degree or higher
  • Fluency in a second language preferred

WORKING CONDITIONS

This is a flexible, part-time position. All presentations take place during school hours (7am-4pm) on weekdays. Associates work from home and report to the Outreach Director. Training is provided.

COMPENSATION

Internships

We currently have internships available in Sales, Marketing, Outreach, PR, Graphic Design, Video Production, and Operations, and Admissions. These unpaid internships require a minimum of 15 hours a week for a minimum of three months and are best suited to undergraduate or graduate students who need to earn credit toward graduation. These internships are based in Denver, Colorado and you would be expected to join the team on MWF from our headquarters in central Denver. The ideal candidate will be able to follow instructions while also thinking outside of the box, motivated to work in a small team, and able to pivot from project to project quickly. An interest in travel and education is a requirement.

Airport Liaison

Your basic responsibility will be to gather all participants and flight chaperones at the designated meeting point in the airport and make sure everyone gets checked into the group flight without complications. If an individual has a delay with their connecting flight, you need to be able to communicate with the airline, the SSA office, parents and participants, and make the appropriate decisions. You will need to be at the airport when the first student arrives and stay until everyone checks in for the group flight (this is typically about five hours). In the case a participant misses the group flight, you will need to stay with them until we can resolve the situation. We also ask that you are available on the travel day when groups return from their program in case something happens. You do not need to come to the airport on these days unless a situation arises that requires another adult (other than the flight chaperone) to be at the airport.

REQUIREMENTS

We are looking for a very responsible, personable and organized person. Teachers, coaches and people with experience working with students are great candidates. We also want to hire someone who lives near the airport and can be flexible since travel can be unpredictable.

COMPENSATION

Compensation is paid per day you spend either at the airport or on call. You will need your own transportation to the airport and we will compensate you for parking.
